AI Overviews

The short answer
Google's AI-written summaries at the top of some search results, with links to the pages they draw on.
AI Overviews are summaries Google generates for some searches, shown above the regular results with links to supporting pages.
Google's guidance for site owners says there are no additional requirements to appear as a supporting link: a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet, and the usual SEO best practices apply. Traffic from AI Overviews is counted in Search Console's Performance report together with other web results.
Pages can't be cited if they are blocked by robots.txt, marked noindex, or limited with nosnippet. Google-Extended, a separate control for some Gemini uses, doesn't affect inclusion in Google Search.
In practice
In practice, a business can't request a place in an AI Overview, but it can make its pages eligible and useful: indexed, not restricted with nosnippet, and clear about the facts people ask for. Check the sources cited for your most important searches, compare what those pages say with yours, and make sure your own pages answer the same questions accurately, with your own specifics.
