The search words aren't in the description
Google bolds the words people searched for, which draws the eye to your result.
Widths are estimates in Arial at Google's sizes. Google sets no fixed limit and may rewrite titles and snippets.
What the preview shows
Google shows each result as a title link, your site's name and address, and a snippet of text. It writes the title link mostly from your page's <title>, and the snippet often from your meta description. Both are cut to fit the screen, so a long title ends in "..." before the words that matter.
The preview draws both at Google's sizes and measures them in pixels. Wide letters such as W and M take more room than i and l, which is why a character count alone can mislead.
Why the title and description matter
The title is the biggest thing people see before they choose a result. A clear one that says what the page is and who it is for gets more clicks from the same position. The description doesn't change rankings, but it is the sales line under the title, and Google uses it when it matches the search well.
How to write a good pair
- Lead with what the page is about, in the words people search: "Dentist in Kothrud, Pune" before your brand name.
- Keep the title under about 600 pixels on desktop. That is roughly 50 to 60 characters.
- Write a description of one or two plain sentences, about 120 to 155 characters: what you offer, where, and one reason to choose you.
- Give every page its own pair. Repeated titles make Google pick its own.
- Skip keyword lists and ALL CAPS. Google may rewrite titles that look stuffed or shouty.
Google can still rewrite them
Google rewrites titles and snippets when it thinks another line on the page answers the search better. You can't stop that, but a clear, accurate title that matches the page's main heading is rewritten much less often.
Questions people ask
How long should a title be for Google?
Google sets no character limit, but it cuts title links to the width of the screen. On desktop that is about 600 pixels, roughly 50 to 60 characters. Put the important words first.
How long should a meta description be?
Long enough to say what the page offers, usually 120 to 155 characters. Google cuts snippets to fit the device, and on phones it may show a little less.
Why does Google show a different title from mine?
Google sometimes writes its own title link from your main heading or other text when your title is missing, very long, repeated across pages, or doesn't match the page.
Is anything I type sent to ParSEO?
